Message From the President Jim Prosnit

One of the most important lessons that I’ve learned about political action and making a difference was taught to me by a friend in Washington, DC who spends time lobbying on Capitol Hill. He recalls that once he was speaking with a congressional staffer about the great public attention a particular bill was receiving. “The phones have been ringing off the hook,” the Legislative Assistant told my colleague.

My friend asked, “What does that mean? How many phone calls have to come into Congressman so and so's office to get you to make the statement that the phones have been ringing off the hook on a specific issue?” The staffer said, “Oh, 20 – 30!”

Can you imagine that only 20 – 30 phone calls is perceived as a ground swell of concern being exhibited for a particular cause. I wonder how many calls need to come to our legislators in Hartford before a similar thought is expressed. Probably even less.

The point of course is that it doesn’t take much to make a difference. It doesn’t take all that many calls, or letters, or appearances at committee meetings to send the message that there is passion out there and our representatives better take note. Too often we squander our political power by thinking thoughts like one phone call doesn’t matter.

As we head into some groundbreaking legislative work, remember how influential we can be. CCEAGV needs your voice heard. At the national level, immunity for gun manufacturers and dealers passed the house by an overwhelming margin (285 – 140), and is expected to soon go before the Senate (see related article under Federal Legislation). A variety of state legislation, from ballistic fingerprinting to allowing convicted violent offenders access to pistol permits after five years, are being considered.

We hope that we can count on your support, both financially and vocally, as we continue our efforts to make Connecticut a safer place.
