Statewide Findings

  • 88% of Virginians favor requiring a criminal background check for all gun sales at gun shows; 74% strongly favor the measure
  • 84% of gun owners - and 81% of self-described NRA supporters - favor requiring a criminal background check on all gun sales at gun shows
  • 38% of Virginians mistakenly believe criminal background checks are required for all sales at gun shows; 35% do not know
  • 34% of Virginians would vote against a candidate if he or she refused to close the gun show loophole; only 4% would vote against a candidate if he or she supported closing the gun show loophole

Regional Media Market Findings

Northern Virginia

  • 86% of Northern Virginians favor requiring a criminal background check for all gun sales at gun shows
  • 36% of Northern Virginians mistakenly believe criminal background checks are required for all sales at gun shows; 34% do not know
  • 35% of Northern Virginians own guns; 34% consider themselves NRA supporters

Richmond

  • 87% of Richmond-area voters favor requiring a criminal background check for all gun sales at gun shows
  • 31% of Richmond-area voters mistakenly believe criminal background checks are required for all sales at gun shows; 41% do not know
  • 36% of Richmond-area voters own guns; 30% consider themselves NRA supporters

Roanoke

  • 90% of Roanoke-area voters favor requiring a criminal background check for all gun sales at gun shows
